In the Riva Weekend Club, our young coders will learn how to solve computational problems by learning how to code. We use a variety of tools and resources including robotics and coding platforms such as Scratch.  

From a progression standpoint, kids will graduate in a year or so to learning advanced programming languages such as Python, which is used by many tech companies today such as Google, Facebook and Amazon. They will be way ahead of most kids in the UK in their tech skills, but if it can be done in a fun way, why not! 

What you learn

  • Learn the fundamental concepts of Computer Programming and have fun with it

  • Learn to build cool games, stories and animations and share with the online community

  • Solve problems in a structured way, develop critical reasoning, logical thinking and gain creative confidence

Q: Can you arrange for a laptop for these classes? I can't send one with my child.

We highly recommend that your children bring their own laptops. This will also allow them to continue their learning at home - they will have all resources they need at hand. 

 

If they absolutely cannot bring their own (or your) laptop, I'd be happy to arrange for a loaner laptop at a fee of £80 for the term, which they can use during class.

Q: Can I come for a drop-in class?

 

Of course, feel free to register for a drop-in class by sending an email to learn@rivalearning.com. Drop-in classes are free, but you must bring your own laptop.

 

Learning how to code is like learning maths and english - it takes time but we make it a lot of fun.

Q: What are the pre-requisites for the course?

Well, as long as your child is at least 8 years old and curious, that's all you need. And you must bring your own laptop.

Q: What programming language will you use for the course?

We primarily use the Scratch platform. While programming robots, we might use flow based programming or Blockly.

 

Scratch has been designed (at MIT) to teach kids how to code in a fun and interactive way. If your child is just about starting on his/her computing journey, or is a visual learner or if you are in doubt, Scratch is the perfect place to start.

Q: Where can I find out more about Scratch itself?

Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. The MIT Scratch website here has a lot of information and resources about Scratch. There's also a page for parents.

In the Riva Weekend Club, our senior coders will learn how to solve computational problems by learning how to code. We use a variety of tools and resources including robotics and tiny computers to make it fun. During the course, we will use Python as our programming language.  

From a progression standpoint, students will start with the basics and get to intermediate level in about a year. They will be way ahead of most kids in the UK in their tech skills, but if it can be done in a fun way, why not!
